Why Do Law and Ethics Matter to Journalists?
Law and ethics isn't just for lawyers and philosophers...it's for communicators, too!
As journalists, we play a vital role in informing society about their surroundings, the truth, and events they encounter every day (James, 2009). As our modern world continues to pursue new and emerging technology, and the internet becomes more widely available, our jobs as communicators continue to change. Particularly with the advent of new media, journalists have a plethora of resources at their finger tips. Through blogging, social media, instant messaging, and applications it is easier than ever before to share, connect, and communicate (James, 2009).
But, while the media landscape continues to transform so does communication law and ethics. Right before our very eyes legal context is taking shape--thus, it is important for journalists to understand the legal and ethical implications of their work.
This digital handbook will guide you through the various aspects of law and ethics as they apply to our digital world. As a 21st-century communicator it is critical for you to become acquainted with law and ethics to better convey content and messages to your intended audiences.
